24-hour shifts boost morale in Barrie
Aug. 6, 2008, Barrie, Ont. - Firefighters in Barrie, Ont., are better rested, better trained and in better health after switching to 24-hour shifts from the traditional four days on, four days off. It has really taken hold in the past two to three years in the province, deputy chief Rick Monkman told Barrie Advance.com. Belleville firefighters still without contract

Aug. 6, 2008, Belleville, Ont. - The City of Belleville could soon be on the hook for more than $1.2 million in retroactive payments to firefighters. As the Belleville Intelligencer reports, about 60 unionized members of the Belleville Fire Department have been without a contract since 2004, despite settlements with the city police officers and 250 municipal workers. Firefighter training program opens

Aug. 6, 2008, Regina - For the next 12 weeks students will be drilled on burn rates and how flames react to oxygen as part of their education at Saskatchewan's only professional firefighter training program. As the Regina Leader Post reports, as more people move back to Saskatchewan or migrate into the cities from rural areas, cities are adding new fire stations to serve their expanding population bases and this, in combination with an aging workforce, is creating a demand for new hirees, said Brian Shul, co-ordinator of the industrial and trades program at Parkland Rgional College. Pre-built homes destroyed by fire

Aug. 6, 2008, Saskatoon - Two pre-built homes are gone after being destroyed by fire. As Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services Battalion Chief Jim Wood told News Talk 650, the fire appears to have started in some hay bales located on the same lot right behind the two homes.  READ MORE

 
Newfoundland fire index low
Aug. 6, 2008, Corner Brook, N.L. - Ivan Downton says the recent rains and cooler temperatures have helped push the forest fire indexes in the province toward “low.” As the Corner Brook Western Star reports, the provincial forest fire duty officer said as of Tuesday there were two fires burning in Labrador, but there’s little smoke, and with rain expected to continue they weren’t expected to grow.
