N.S. families thank fire crews

July 4, 2008, Halifax - Ruth Wells lost her home and everything in it to the massive forest fire that ripped through the Porters Lake area last month, but she says she’ll be forever grateful to the firefighters who managed to save the rest of her community. As the Halifax Chronicle Herald reports, families gathered gathered Thursday night for a ceremony of appreciation for the fire and emergency services personnel who responded to the blaze that began on June 13 and was the largest ever to strike a suburban area in Nova Scotia. NASA monitoring Saskatchewan wildfires

July 4, 2008, Scientists say wildfires in northern Saskatchewan could go "pyro" this weekend, sending ash, smoke and gases soaring more than 10 kilometres up into Earth's upper atmosphere. As CanWest News reports, it is one of the more spectacular ways nature regenerates the northern boreal forest  and one with such far-ranging implications that NASA has two research planes and 120 scientists in Cold Lake, Alta., tracking the blazes. July 4, 2008, Regina — There were more evacuations forced by thick smoke from forest fires in northern Saskatchewan on Thursday and crews were bracing for a storm with high winds that could whip up the flames.

Residents near flour mill fire return home

July 3, 2008, Toronto - Residents who were forced to evacuate following a fire at a flour mill in Woodbridge were being allowed back into their homes Thursday. As the Toronto Star reports, the fire at Hayhoe Mills began just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night. It took a dozen fire trucks and around 40 firefighters from Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham to get it under control just after midnight. READ MORE
