Functions:
As a member of a fire suppression and life safety team, Regina City Firefighters protect the lives and property of the City’s citizens by conducting prevention services, providing fire safety education, combating and extinguishing fires and working in other emergency situations under a variety of conditions frequently involving considerable hazard.
NOTE: Shift work including weekends and public holidays is required.
Typical duties include:
• Responsible for all fire suppression duties necessary to save life and property, combat, extinguish and/or prevent fires by rapidly and efficiently performing varied duties as required under emergency conditions.
• Provide emergency medical response and aid; perform rescue/extrication operations where necessary to prevent loss of life or further injury from any cause.
• Performs a variety of rescue related duties to protect the public and lessen the severity of injuries related to motor vehicle collisions including the extrication of victims from collisions, and incidents involving hazardous materials.
• Performs various maintenance duties to fire services apparatus, equipment and department property.
• Attends training classes and studies assigned materials related to firefighting and fire prevention. Candidates will be expected to certify and maintain certification within their various assignments.
• Teach basic fire prevention and life safety techniques at schools and at public venues.
• Participate in public relations projects involving visits, demonstrations and community events as directed.
• Performs related work as required.
All firefighter recruits must be in excellent physical condition, have the ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions, act quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Candidates will be initially screened to determine their eligibility to write the Written Exam.
Written Exam Criteria:
1. Grade 12 or GED equivalency.
2. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). Certification for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level II.
3. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) Certification (current to June 2008) in the Province of Saskatchewan.
4. Must posses a valid driver’s license with air brake endorsement (Driver’s abstract-current within 3 months).
NOTE: A photocopy of the original documents supporting your qualifications must be provided (see above 1-4) with your application for you to be selected to write the Written Exam.
Criminal records checks will only be required from those candidates who are being considered for employment offers.
Consideration will be given to those applicants currently enrolled in a recognized firefighter pre-employment program who will graduate with appropriate certification prior to our hiring date. Confirmation of course enrollment and completion date must be provided by a recognized Fire College.
