Fire destroys B.C. plywood plant

May 27, 2008, Prince George, B.C. - A local state of emergency has been declared in Prince George, B.C. in the wake of a major fire blamed for sparking two more blazes over a wide section of the central B.C. city.

Toronto writer Keith Hanley won the award for best news story in a publication with circulation under
100,000 for his story Training Pays Dividends in the   July 2007 issue of Canadian Firefighter and EMS Quarterly. The award  is from the Toronto Firefighters Association, Local 3888 of the IAFF.
 Hanley is pictured with firefighters left) Geoff Mortimer, Capt. Mark Fitzsimmons and Mark Ashcroft, who were featured in the story about rapid ladder escape. 


Man charged with arson in Barrie fire

May 23, 2008, Barrie, Ont. - Police in Barrie, Ont., have charged a 52-year-old man with arson in a fire earlier this week that ripped through several businesses and apartments.



Deaths deemed murder/suicide

May 23, 2008, Toronto - Police in Toronto say a 41-year-old man they believe committed a double murder-suicide stabbed one person and strangled another before setting fire to an apartment.

Second major blaze in Barrie in five months

May 21, 2008, Barrie, Ont. - Firefighters battled a major blaze in Barrie overnight, marking the second time in less than six months that fire has struck the central Ontario community’s downtown area.
