Two weeks
ago, we posted a story on our website about a Nova Scotia couple suing the local volunteer
fire departments, claiming damage to their home was the fault of firefighters
from North
Sydney
and Frenchvale.

Remembering a fallen colleague |

Right now, I’m getting ready for a day that I will
never forget. I have had two occasions in the past to deliver eulogies for
colleagues who had passed away off the job, and I remember each of those in
crystal clear detail. So I know that Friday will be no different, as I say
goodbye to my friend of 17 years, District Chief Bob Leek. As most of you will know by now, Bob died in
the line of duty on Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Sunrise Propane fire.

As many
of you know, I’m working from Nova Scotia this week and didn’t tune into Toronto news yesterday morning until the Sunrise
Propane fire was well under control.

With gasoline prices
bouncing to as much as $1.35 a litre and beyond, depending on the region you are
in, there's no shortage of reasons to grind your teeth while you fill your tank
(not to mention filling those pumpers, ladder trucks, emergency response
vehicles, etc.)

One thing
I hear over and over and over from emergency responders is that they need more
funding. Money for training. More for community outreach and fire prevention.
Money for equipment.

It’s a small world. I know this, because over the weekend I was standing in our neighbourhood butcher shop when the woman next to me asked the butcher for the best and easiest-to-cook cut of beef. He recommended New York strip loins, and she ordered 12. I ordered two of the same from the other gentleman behind the counter, at which point the woman asked me if the steaks would be good done on the barbeque.

I wonder what it would sound like if you handed a Stratocaster to
someone who was a real whiz at Guitar Hero and asked them to play for
real. Probably not too great. The game may be fun but it is not a
realistic test of the theory and skill behind actually playing an
electric guitar. So unless the gamer is also an accomplished guitarist
I wouldn't be expecting any Pete Townsend power chords.

Still with the Maritime Association of Fire Chiefs conference - which wrapped up last Wednesday with a banquet of planked halibut thanks to the wonderful folks at the Conquerall Bank Fire Department, and some wildly entertaining Newfoundland jokes – the wrap-up sessions on apparatus by FDNY’s Mike Wilbur were something all 250 chiefs in Lunenburg’s HB Studios theatre (where they make PlayStation games!) aren’t likely to forget.
