Secret list honours fallen DC |
Aug. 11, 2008
As many of you know, I’m working from Nova Scotia this week and didn’t tune into Toronto news yesterday morning until the Sunrise
Propane fire was well under control.

Traffic fatalaties fall with rising gas proces |
|
July 28, 2008
With gasoline prices
bouncing to as much as $1.35 a litre and beyond, depending on the region you are
in, there's no shortage of reasons to grind your teeth while you fill your tank
(not to mention filling those pumpers, ladder trucks, emergency response
vehicles, etc.)

Funding priorities skewed by 9-11 |
|
July 25, 2008
One thing
I hear over and over and over from emergency responders is that they need more
funding. Money for training. More for community outreach and fire prevention.
Money for equipment.

Small world, small talk, big fire |
July 21, 2008
It’s a small world. I know this, because over the weekend I was standing in our neighbourhood butcher shop when the woman next to me asked the butcher for the best and easiest-to-cook cut of beef. He recommended New York strip loins, and she ordered 12. I ordered two of the same from the other gentleman behind the counter, at which point the woman asked me if the steaks would be good done on the barbeque.

The value of online learning |
July 16, 2008
I wonder what it would sound like if you handed a Stratocaster to
someone who was a real whiz at Guitar Hero and asked them to play for
real. Probably not too great. The game may be fun but it is not a
realistic test of the theory and skill behind actually playing an
electric guitar. So unless the gamer is also an accomplished guitarist
I wouldn't be expecting any Pete Townsend power chords.

Still with the Maritime Association of Fire Chiefs conference - which wrapped up last Wednesday with a banquet of planked halibut thanks to the wonderful folks at the Conquerall Bank Fire Department, and some wildly entertaining Newfoundland jokes – the wrap-up sessions on apparatus by FDNY’s Mike Wilbur were something all 250 chiefs in Lunenburg’s HB Studios theatre (where they make PlayStation games!) aren’t likely to forget.

July 9, 2008 Lunenburg, N.S. – It’s been an interesting few days here at the annual convention of the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association.
At Monday’s opening ceremonies, just hours before the world famous Joggins fossil cliffs were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the mayor of Lunenburg (this historic fishing town is also a UNESCO heritage site) delivered a speech to the assembled chiefs.

A prayer for rain where the wildfires burn |
July 4, 2008
Between travel and magazine commitments, not to mention the daily care and feeding of various corners of the web site that take time, I’ve let blogging slide down my list of priorities.
