Interesting
news day today. A sinkhole in Montreal swallowed a car full of people, a
fire truck was stolen in B.C. and six firefighters were hurt in a controlled
burn in Alberta. The planets must be aligned strangely, or something. You can
see all three news stories here.

It was a
three-peat at the FFIC Open Friday with Team A.J. Stone – Bill and Mike Stone
along with King Township Chief Bryan Burbidge and Richmond Hill Chief Steve
Kraft – taking the championship once again at 14 under par. Here they are
with the hardware.

A Caper caper, so to speak . . . |

I’m from Sydney, Nova Scotia, so stories from there
always
pique my interest. Cape Breton Regional Municipality Fire Chief Bernie
MacKinnon has had his hands with a rash of arsons, controversy over
the closing
of the Ashby fire station due to mold and differences of opinion over the potential location of a
new
fire hall. Fire stories from across the country come directly to my
BlackBerry
and this morning’s headline was a doozy: Police investigate after fire
truck
stolen and burned in Cape Breton . . . What next?

The
trip to FDIC in Indy with The Fire Within was the biggest eye opener for two of
my members that they ever had in regard to the fire service, as it was for me
last year.
These
two members, one with 16 years and the other with over 30 years in the fire
service, told me many times during our trip that this is a life-changing
experience.

Tying up loose ends . . . |

We’re
back – a little worse for wear but happy to have gone to FDIC-Indy and come
back with a slew of new contacts and story idea for our magazine.
Saturday
was a long day with the Air Canada flight to Toronto (on a 26-seater jet) from Indianapolis delayed due to thunder storms. We
were enjoying snacks and a beverage at restaurant near our gate and were
eventually joined by folks from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal,
Bullard, Paratech and MSA, so at least the company was good!

Same time next year . . . |

FDIC 2010 seems to have been a success - at least as far as The Fire Within is concerned. A great week with a great group of firefighters - thanks to all the guys and girls who joined us for this trip. Factory tours, conference sessions, hands-on training, baseball, lost bets, and the never-ending Buffalos, this group was amazing.
Thanks to WFR and TFT for everything and to the group - in a sea of Americans, you did Canada proud! We hope to see everyone again in 2011.

The new Captain Canada . . . |
Saturday, April 24, 2010
Indianapolis, Ind. - Just about to head back home to Pennsylvania from a great week at FDIC with the group from The Fire Within. Being the only Yankee in the group, I was honored to have been included with the Canadians and welcomed with open arms. Thanks to Chad, Jodi, Neil, Brad and the WFR guys for the hospitality and for giving me the opportunity to take part in awesome training lessons and the trade show. It has been an unforgettable week. I'm looking forward to keeping in touch with my new friends and hope to see everyone again!
