Oct. 22, 2012, Winnipeg – The other day, as I was shuffling my kids back and forth from hockey, driving down Pembina Highway, which is one of the main drags in south Winnipeg, I saw a man about my age walking down the sidewalk whom I frequently have seen in the neighbourhood the last few years.

Oct. 16, 2012, Toronto – Don’t you wish it were that easy? This house fire isn’t going so well right now; the water flowing though the municipal grid is experiencing unusual levels of friction, and the choice of location of the ventilation opening on the roof does not appear to be acceptable to the volumes of hot gases in the structure. So, as incident commander, I’m going to ask the Lieutenant Fire Governor to prorogue this fire until such time as another incident commander can be selected.

Oct. 15, 2012, Toronto - Did anyone out there happen to catch the premier episode of Chicago Fire last Wednesday evening? I’m not a big fan of formula TV, so there have been many cop, lawyer and medical shows that have passed me by over the years. However, probably like a lot of you (at least the older ones), I watched Emergency every day after school. I saw Backdraft in the theatre the week it opened, and accepted it for what it was – an action movie. I was disappointed in that the first big fire movie was, in essence, a murder mystery, but the interactions among the firefighters in the hall and on the trucks were real to me.

Oct. 15, 2012, Redwood Meadows, Alta. - Like all of us, I love this job. Yes, I don’t get paid for it but that is by choice for now. I grew up in a firefighting family and aside from getting my recent chief fire officer professional designation, bringing home a new truck for the department is one of the biggest thrills I’ve experienced.

Oct. 9, 2012, Redwood Meadows, Alta. – “Here I am, on the road again,” wrote Bob Seger, one of my favorite artists. This has rung true with me over the past year, it seems. I have lived out of suitcases quite a bit this year for someone who does not do this fire chief gig full time. My full-time, volunteer job has had me all over the continent for different reasons.

Oct. 4, 2012, Redwood Meadows, Alta. – I had all the best intentions. I was going to blog each day of the Canadian Association Fire Chiefs (CAFC) conference in St. John’s, N.L. No problem; it is just 500 to 700 words. Easy. NOT! Don’t get me wrong; I love how busy I was at the conference. But there just wasn’t time left in the day to write the way I had wanted to. So, now that there is a little breathing room while I’m back at home, I guess I’ll just write my regular weekly blog and talk about last week.

Oct 2, 2012, Winnipeg – We had two German exchange students arrive on Monday. Katha and Janna are part of a school contingent of Grade 9 students visiting Winnipeg. Next spring, I ship my teenager to Germany to live with them for two weeks. I’ve been thinking how I’m going to explain my safety rules to these young women without embarrassing my own kid and getting my message through to two teenagers who barely speak English (you know, fire plan, smoke alarms, safety spiel . . . don’t talk to weirdos, white vans . . . and Roughrider fans are crazy).
