B.C. smoke alarm initiative gets another boost |

March 28, 2013 – Fire chiefs in British Columbia have expanded their fire-prevention program with a donation of 4,000 smoke alarms. The donation by Super Save Group, a consortium of British Columbia companies that range from shredding services to propane distribution, targets seniors.

March 26, 2013, Prince Albert, Sask. – We have all heard the adage, “the popular decision is not always the right decision, and the right decision is not always the popular decision.” I suggest that popular thinking is not always the right thinking and the right thinking is not always the most popular thinking. A recent conversation with a fire chief of a volunteer department brought back a memory of a conversation I had with my uncle more than 25 years ago: my uncle was a volunteer firefighter serving his town and even today I remember the sense of relief I felt after he explained that he did not don a mask, but he enjoyed operating the pump. Thank goodness, because my uncle had several risk factors for a heart attack, and if he donned a mask there is no doubt in my mind that I would be writing that he was a LODD.

March 20, 2013, Ottawa – Fire chiefs here in Ottawa for the CAFC’s government relations week seem to have made quite an impression on Bytown as they walked up and down O’Connor and Metcalfe streets, often in pairs, en route to Parliament Hill to meet with MPs.

March 19, 2013, Ottawa – The most instructive moment in a meeting I sat in on yesterday between Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L., Fire Chief Vince MacKenzie and Newfoundland NDP MPs Jack Harris (St. John’s East) and Ryan Cleary (St. John’s South – Mount Pearl), happened when MacKenzie explained that sometimes when his volunteer crews show up at structure fires they’re facing three fires not just one – because the siding is burning on the homes on either side of the primary structure.
