Every movement we make originates from our core. Everything you do, every move you make, starts and stops in your core. Knowing that means knowing it’s important. With any popular training concept comes misconceptions and confusion among the public. People also tend to neglect muscles they can’t see. That being said, how do we train our core? How do we improve our core strength? How do we improve stability and balance? Does making your core stronger really improve how you look, feel and move? Last month we discussed the theory of core training. Now we’ll take that knowledge and apply it to your training.

I attended a presentation by a career fire inspector some years back as part of a training officers' seminar. He did a very good job and obviously had an expert level of knowledge on the current technology of sprinklers, various types of detectors and smoke alarms.

“Upsala Fire Department, we have a report of a two-vehicle collision involving tractor trailers, kilometre 12 Graham Rd.. Ambulance is requesting assistance. Time out, 02:45.”
Nothing out of the ordinary for a volunteer fire department, right? Except that the Graham Road winds through a vast area of no-man’s land, meaning that it doesn’t belong to any fire response area, so we really aren’t supposed to go there.

Life is full of choices. We all have to work for money, except for the privileged few whose money works for them. The choices we make about what type of work we do for our money, full time or part time, are indicative of our character. I don’t think that firefighters or others who serve the public are necessarily “better” than merchants or lawyers but I do think that there is in the heart of every firefighter a higher moral character that leads them to their courageous and generous calling. Just as I could have spent my career in private business or academia, my fellow firefighters could have chosen other paths. And although we are well paid, many of these paths could have been much more lucrative.

When I mention core training, most people assume I’m talking about
crunches and sit-ups. Today there are infomercials with new crunch
systems, fitness magazines showing you proper sit ups and “Ab-Blasting”
classes showing you every abdominal exercise known to man. The question
is whether these exercises and classes improve the way you look, feel
and function?
