Oct. 30, 2012, Calgary – The City of Calgary has charged five companies with building code infractions that allege renovations to a high-rise condo parkade compromised the structure of the building.
Ground-floor businesses and the first three floors of the parkade of Rocky Mountain Court had to be evacuated in July after the city found that the resurfacing of the lot's second floor had put the safety of the lower floors of the building at risk.
The evacuation came a month after two people were killed when part of a parkade roof collapsed at a mall in Elliot Lake, Ont.
The owners and property managers of Rocky Mountain Court are among the companies charged.
The charges include failing to notify the businesses below the compromised parkade, failing to notify the authorities and failing to properly support the damaged structure to prevent collapse.
There are also charges related to not having the proper permits.
