Secret List details injuries, deaths
Written by Laura King
Jan. 23, 2008
Like many of you, I subscribe to Billy Goldfeder's blog,
The Secret List, and I'm amazed at Goldfeder's dedication and commitment to the cause. But is it just me, or have the last few weeks been especially hard on firefighters?

It seems that a line-of-duty death is reported almost daily. Jan. 22: Assistant chief struck/killed at scene-LODD. Jan. 21: Maryland firefighter thrown from apparatus. Jan. 19: Firefighter found dead in his bed during shift change. Jan. 16: A 20-year-old volunteer firefighter from Cambria, WI, was killed in the line of duty when his car crossed into opposing traffic and collided with two semi-trucks on the scene of a previous incident. On and on it goes.

Certainly there are thousands more firefighters and incidents in the U.S. than in Canada and maybe it's just that seeing all these firefighter injuries and deaths reported in one place is disturbing. Maybe we don't hear about some of these deaths or injuries in Canada because they're not as widely reported, or maybe we're just that much smaller that there are considerably fewer of these types of tragedies. Maybe it's the time of year - bad weather and harsh conditions equal higher risk.

If nothing else, Goldfeder's list gives us pause for thought and reminds us to take extra precautions. You can subscribe here.
