More alarming smoke-detector news
March 6, 2008

It’s bad enough that more than half of Canadians take the batteries out of their smoke detectors when shower steam or a bit of smoke from the oven causes them to go off (see blog entry below), but it’s truly disturbing that some fire officials are warning that the smoke detectors most of us have in our homes are second rate.

Not everyone agrees with that pronouncement but a report in the Globe and Mail today suggests that photoelectric smoke detectors sound two minutes faster than a combination photoelectric/ionization detectors and an alarming seven minutes sooner than an ionization model alone.

According to report, most provincial fire officials recommend both types of alarms. We’ll post a question about the types of alarms on our website next week to get some feedback. Meantime, let us know what you think.
