Tying up loose ends . . .

Monday, April 26, 2010

We’re back – a little worse for wear but happy to have gone to FDIC-Indy and come back with a slew of new contacts and story idea for our magazine.

Saturday was a long day with the Air Canada flight to Toronto (on a 26-seater jet) from Indianapolis delayed due to thunder storms. We were enjoying snacks and a beverage at restaurant near our gate and were eventually joined by folks from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal, Bullard, Paratech and MSA, so at least the company was good!

I finally made it to the Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday, where the majority of the apparatus was set up. It was an impressive sight.

Stay tuned to FFIC for stories about some of the amazing new products (check out Hamilton, Ont.-based One-Power) and features on some of the cool stuff we learned last week in Indy, including air management, some neat volunteer recruitment and retention strategies and a slew of public education ideas.

If you were at FDIC send us your thoughts on the show and the conference. Tell us about the workshop sessions you attended or what you saw at the show that impressed you – you can do so using the comment space below.

The folks from The Fire Within left Indy earlier Saturday after a productive week of hands-on training, education workshops, networking and some socializing on the size. Warning – shameless plug: If your department hasn’t yet explored the benefits of The Fire Within check out the website and get in touch with Chad or Jodi and find out how this unique, forward-thinking Canadian entity can help you raise money for, and awareness of, your volunteer fire department.

So, a few days of catch up and follow up from FDIC this week before the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs show and conference, which starts Saturday with the always popular and outspoken Billy Goldfeder and the pilot of Beyond Helmets and Hoses, a national leadership training program being launched by the CAFC in partnership with the OAFC and other provincial chiefs associations.

I have four passes for the trade show – if you live near Toronto, be the first to e-mail me and tell me one of the five components of the program (hint: check out the links above) to win a pass.
