Laura King Welcome Firehall.com viewers
Written by Laura King

Monday, July 5, 2010

As is usual these days, we’re on the road again, in Yarmouth, N.S., this week for the Maritime Association of Fire Chiefs conference. More on that in a minute. Meantime, thanks to all the good folks at Firehall.com for the positive comments on the acquisition by Annex Publishing & Printing, the parent company of FFIC and Canadian Firefighter and EMS Quarterly, of the website and your encouragement to keep it fresh and moving forward.

We’ve long enjoyed the news and forums on Firehall.com and we’re working on ways to integrate some of what we do at Firefightingincanada.com with Firehall.com and in our magazines to better serve our readers and viewers. Meantime, nothing will change. Firefightingincanada.com and Firehall.com will remain separate websites with similar news content but, for the most part, the other unique features of the two sites will remain.

We hope web viewers will participate in both sites (Firehall forums, Firefightingincanada blog discussions) and let us know what you think of our news and views as we aim to further our position as a digital leader in the fire service.

Back to the MFCA. Yarmouth Fire Department platoon chief Lynn Seeley breathed a big sigh of relief last night as the memorial service got under way after months of planning for the conference. (I’ll try to post some pictures later today from the always spectacular Sunday evening parade of chief officers, if the wireless connections allows it!). Meantime, here’s a great photo of Lynn from Wednesday’s Yarmouth Vanguard.

It’s cool to have a front-row view of the difference and traditions at the various provincial conferences. In Ontario, for example, the Sunday evening memorial service is a beautiful and moving affair; in B.C., the 50-50 draw is a major initiative to raise money for projects chosen by the women’s auxiliary (generally a burn camp or burn unit); at the Maritime conference, the Sunday parade to the church service often draws townspeople and spectators and the evening entertainment is always first-rate (we’ll keep you posted on that – it’s comedy night tonight).

I’m looking forward to hearing Tim Vandenbrink on Tuesday. Tim is the Assistant Fire Marshal in Fire Protection for Edmonton Fire Rescue. His passion for fire and life safety is contagious and his presentation is as energetic as they come. We’ll let you know how it goes.

Off now to fight the crowds at the breakfast buffet. Have a good Monday!
