Labrador community says it needs pumper

June 29, 2015, Cartwright, N.L. - The mayor of a Labrador community says the volunteer fire department doesn't have the means to fight fires.

Cartwright Mayor Dwight Lethbridge says if a fire breaks out in a place without close access to water, the fire department will have to sit back and watch it burn.

The community's pumper truck was destroyed as it was fighting a fire Sunday.

But he says the truck was almost 40 years old and having mechanical trouble well before the fire.

Lisa Dempster, the member of the house of assembly for Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair, says the community has been asking for a new fire engine for many years.

She says the community has applied to government for a new truck for at least three years.
