The Red Cross says the fire started at a three-storey apartment building (in Nepean) just before 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen says the school is preparing for as many as 40 students who were displaced by the fire to move in to its residence for the time being.

The Red Cross has also been on the scene assisting residents of the building, assessing their specific needs and sorting out long-term accommodations.

They say they found a place for every displaced person to stay Saturday night, either at Algonquin College, with family, friends, or at other buildings owned by the same company.
