Province handing out special smoke detectors
Oct. 5, 2015, Gander, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government has announced a pilot project aimed at providing special smoke detectors for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The province is spending $60,000 to increase awareness about the need for people who are hearing impaired to install visual or tactile fire safety alerts in their homes.
It says the special alarms – which range in cost from $500 to $1,000 – will be provided to nearly 70 households in greatest need and applications will be available online starting next Monday.
The announcement was made in Gander to mark Fire Prevention Week, which runs to October 10th.
