Saskatchewan fishing camp destroyed by fire

Black Lake, Sask. - A fishing camp in northern Saskatchewan was hit by a brush fire over the weekend.

Camp Grayling's owners declined an interview request and the extent of the damage is not yet known.

But Black Lake Denesuline First Nation Chief Rick Robillard says the camp burned to the ground and photos appear to show blackened trees and smoldering structures.

Camp Grayling's owners have confirmed all their staff are safe.

The camp had a lodge, 12 guest cabins and a recreation cabin with a sauna, and it hired local guides.

Hundreds of people left Black Lake on Friday night when the fire burned close to the community, but the evacuation ended early Saturday.

"It was very unfortunate and it's very sad to see a beautiful camp being destroyed by fire,'' Robillard said. "(There's) a lot of good memories from a lot people here.''

The province says the fire is stable.

Black Lake is about 800 kilometres north of Prince Albert and has a population of about 1,700 people.
