May 21, 2024, Winnipeg — Manitoba fire departments are receiving a joint investment of $38.4 million over four years from the federal and provincial government.

Each government contributed 50 per cent of the funds, which will be used to purchase and upgrade firefighting and training equipment, increasing preparedness of wildland firefighters and facilitating resource sharing across Canada.

The investment is being made under the equipment fund of Canada’s Fighting and Managing Wildfires in a Changing Climate Program, which was introduced in the 2022 budget. This program will provide $256 million over five years to projects supporting the efforts of provinces and territories to strengthen their capacities and capabilities in fire management through the procurement of specialized equipment.
