911 knocked out by forest fire restored in western Labrador

July 9, 2013, Wabush, N.L. – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says 911 service has been restored to residents of Labrador West more than a week after it was knocked out by a large forest fire.

Residents were given alternate numbers to dial for police, fire and ambulance services in the event of emergencies while 911 was down.

The blaze has been burning for two weeks near the small mining town of Wabush and has since spread into neighbouring Quebec.

Officials say the fire now encompasses about 270 square kilometres.

A state of emergency remains in effect for Wabush, though no evacuations have been ordered.

The fire has also led to temporary closures along the Trans Labrador Highway, with police providing escorts when it's been deemed safe to do so.
