June 17, 2024, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, B.C. — The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) has been selected to launch the province’s first FireSmart on Wheels Trailer.

The 5,000-pound trailer is solar powered and designed to enhance Fire Smart community events, coming equipped with an awning, guides and manuals, FireSmart promotional items, equipment for on-site presentations, and more, the region said in a statement.

The RDKB was chosen by FireSmart BC and the Fire Chiefs Association of BC due to its emergency management team’s track record, dedicated wildfire mitigation specialists, and robust FireSmart initiatives, the region said in a press release.

“This mobile unit will significantly enhance our FireSmart efforts in schools and communities and provide valuable support to our wildfire mitigation specialists across the region,” said Carlene Pires, coordinator of RDKB’s Emergency Program and FireSmart Coordinator, in a statement.

The region will also be offering this new resource to neighbouring First Nations, regional districts, and municipalities on loan for free to promote widespread education and resilience, she said in her quote.

The trailer will make its debut at the Big White Community Clean-Up Event from June 22 to 23, with the success of the pilot program, measured by data, feedback, and usage frequency, determining its potential adoption across the province.
