It’s been a while since I’ve blogged! The last entry, on Aug. 13, was just before I started vacation in the fabulous Cape Breton Highlands National Park. When I returned to work after Labour Day, we were focused on our cross-country survey of fire chiefs. That project is just about complete and we’ll have the results for you in our March issue.

major undertaking well in hand, it’s time to get back to blogging. Not that I
have a whole lot to say, but I can point you to some pretty interesting stuff.
of weeks ago, the IAFC posted a statement on its website supporting so-called two
hatters. You can read it here . And last week, FireRescue1 columnist Jason Zigmont
weighed in with a bit of a challenge. “The IAFC,” he said, “has made
a great step toward a united professional fire service; now it is up to each of
us to take the next step.” True enough. You can read his entire column here.

Scotia, the stories by Halifax
Chronicle Herald reporter Dan Arsenault about polygraph tests for firefighter
recruits have raised some hackles. Last week, Arsenault interviewed former Halifax fire
chief Mike Eddy, who instituted the polygraphs after the old hiring process
failed to weed out a man charged with beating his girlfriend. You can read the
