Dec. 20, 2013, Bishop's Falls, N.L. – The Canadian Red Cross says it is helping six people after a fire Thursday night damaged a four-unit apartment building in Bishop's Falls, N.L.
The Red Cross says volunteers have helped all six people with emergency purchases of clothing, food and personal care items.
A woman and two children aged 12 and 16 who were living in an apartment are staying with relatives after the fire.
The Red Cross has arranged emergency lodging for one man, while the Salvation Army helped another man.
The agency says a woman was hospitalized after the fire for treatment of medical conditions that were not related to the blaze.
Fire Chief Gary Harnum says the fire started in the kitchen of an apartment and was extinguished without causing major damage to the building, but there was smoke and water damage in all four units.
He says electricity to the building had to be disconnected for safety reasons.
The Red Cross says the cause of the fire has not been determined.
