Dec. 27, 2013, Surrey, B.C. – An early morning Boxing Day fire at a Vancouver-area apartment has left 11 people out in the cold.

The fire broke out at a complex in Surrey, engulfing six units on the top floor of the building in flames and black smoke and forcing residents to rush out in their pajamas.

Resident Trinity Firth says some tenants could only make it to the second-floor ledge of the two-storey building before being rescued by fire crews.

Acting battalion chief Brian Carmichael with the Surrey Fire Department says there has been significant damage to the building and power has been shut off.

He says Emergency Social Services will take in tenants of the affected units who don't have anywhere to go.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
