Police and firefighters responded to an area of Lake Simcoe in Innisfil on Thursday night after the stranded boy called 911 from a cellphone.
South Simcoe Police say the Innisfil teen had gone out on the ice to walk to Fox Island earlier in the afternoon but on his return home in the dark, he heard cracking noises on the ice and became disoriented.
The boy remained where he was and stayed in contact with rescuers by cellphone while fire department ice rescue boats and York Regional Police snowmobiles were sent to the scene.
Firefighters eventually found the boy unharmed near Fox Island and he was returned to shore at Innisfil Beach Park where an ambulance was waiting.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene and reunited with his parents.
