Burlington, Ont., mayor confirms three dead in derailment

BURLINGTON, Ont. - The mayor of Burlington, Ont., says three people are dead after a Via train derailment.

Rick Goldring says emergency crews are working to pull other passengers from the wreckage and at least one air ambulance is on standby.


The train came off the tracks at Plains Road and King Road near Aldershot station this afternoon.


Via spokeswoman Michelle Lamarche says 75 people were on board the train travelling from Niagara Falls, Ont., to Toronto.


Goldring says the crash has caused minor damage to nearby buildings.

Police haven't released any details.


GO Transit says its trains are turning back at Burlington.
