Feb. 4, 2014, Moncton, N.B. – CN says it is planning to bring a special tanker car to New Brunswick to train firefighters on battling fires after derailments.

CN spokesman Jim Feeny says the training car will be in Moncton in the fall.

He says the car is the only one the company owns in Canada and shows firefighters how pressurized tanker cars are built, the safety mechanisms they contain and what firefighters will encounter if a fire breaks out.

Moncton fire Chief Eric Arsenault says his department expects to train all 100 of its members, though he believes the chance of a tanker car fire in his community is remote.

Feeny says CN also met Tuesday with the mayor of Edmundston and agreed to discuss similar training opportunities for firefighters in northwestern New Brunswick.

Two CN freight trains derailed in the province last month, including one where 19 cars left the tracks on Jan. 7 in Plaster Rock that resulted in a major fire.
