Cold spell keeps firefighters busy

Cold enough for ya? Yes, we know it’s colder in other parts of the country but in southwestern Ontario we’re not used to these freezing temps and all this precipitation, which is why every time it snows firefighters get called to incidents like the one Sunday on Highway 400 north of Toronto.

Crews at the Bradford/West Gwillimbury Fire & Emergency Services get called to accidents on this narrow highway all the time but with the weather lately it’s been particularly bad. Here’s what the CBC had to say on Sunday:
“A half-kilometre stretch of the northbound lanes of Highway 400 near Bradford was littered with the wreckage of about 50 cars and trucks, Ontario Provincial Police said. About 30 vehicles were in another pileup north of that location, police said. The Toronto Star reported a third pileup involving 15 vehicles.”
The culprit? Whiteout conditions that left numerous passengers with broken limbs and back and neck injuries. All in a day’s work for Bradford/West Gwillimbury.
