Construction starts on new fire hall at Trenton base

May 22, 2012, Trenton, Ont. – A new fire hall at 8 Wing Trenton that is
expected to open next summer will house 14 truck bays and accommodate
the base’s new 12,000-litre fire trucks.

At a sod-turning ceremony Tuesday, Chris Alexander, parliamentary
secretary to Defence Minister Peter McKay, said the new hall is among
several federal initiatives to boost 8 Wing’s capabilities.

"This government is delivering on its commitment to modernize defence
infrastructure and equipment to meet the challenges of the 21st
century," Alexander said.

"The construction of this impressive new fire hall is one among several
initiatives that will give 8 Wing Trenton the means to support our new
Royal Canadian Air Force fleets and it contributes to the economy of
local communities."

The project involves the construction of a new 3,176-square-metre fire
hall, which will be able to accommodate 14 truck bays, a vehicle wash
area, a control room, offices, training rooms, equipment maintenance
areas, and firefighter sleeping and support rooms. The new facility is
expected to generate 66 new jobs.

The new building will accommodate 8 Wing’s bigger, 12,000-litre fire
trucks and other emergency-response equipment and personnel to support 8
Wing's CC-177 Globemaster III fleet.

The unit received the first two 12,000-litre crash trucks in 2010 and
2011; two more are expected to be delivered late this summer. The fire
hall also has one 5,000-litre air-deployable crash truck, and expects to
receive two structural fire trucks in 2014 and 2015.

The new fire hall is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) silver, a design standard for
energy-efficient and sustainable construction, emphasizing the
importance of environmental care and energy conservation to 8 Wing.

The contract for construction of the $12.1 million facility was awarded
to M.J. Dixon Construction Ltd. of Mississauga, Ont., following an open
and transparent competition process.

8 Wing's current fire hall was built in 1962 and has a gross area of 566
square metres, with a single-story building and eight vehicle bays. It
will be reassigned for use by the military police once the new fire hall
is built.
