RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff Wells says the fire at White Point Beach Resort is largely under control, but there are spots firefighters are working on.

He says it's not yet clear what caused the fire, but early indications are that it started in the basement of the 83-year-old seaside hotel.

There were no injuries, with staff and guests – including several kids' hockey teams and a wedding party – getting out safely after the fire was detected in the early afternoon.

Wells says the main building, which had a conference centre, guest rooms, a restaurant and pool, was lost in the flames that were kicked up quickly by high winds in the wooden structure.

The resort, which stretches along a white sand beach on the province's south coast, employed more than 100 people.
