Sept. 20, 2012, Saanich, B.C. – Damage could top $300,000 in the wake of a massive blaze at a Victoria-area farm.

Flames broke out at around 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vantreight Farms in Central Saanich, about 20 kilometres north of Victoria.

Smoke billowed hundreds of metres into the air as 65 firefighters from several departments battled the fire.

Crews needed more than six hours to snuff the blaze, which was fuelled by thousands of plastic pallets used to store tulip and daffodil bulbs.

Despite the towering flames, farm workers and firefighters saved equipment and several nearby buildings and greenhouses, and no one was hurt.

A cause of the fire has not been determined, but it is not considered suspicious.
