A ritualistic dishwashing competition at an Ottawa fire station last year escalated to unusual violence in the form of choking, and later that day the victim — an openly non-binary rookie firefighter — was ushered into a supply closet by their supervisor and discouraged from reporting the incident, two internal fire department investigations obtained by CBC have found.

Fort Garry Fire Trucks is Canada’s oldest and largest manufacturer of firefighting apparatus and we sell more than 100 rigs in a typical year. With the exception of the commercial chassis used in some of our trucks, every aspect of design and construction is handled by our employees, from painting — we offer more than 160 shades of red — to pump assembly. One of our keys to success has been our willingness to listen to what our customers need, rather than telling them what we think they need. Our sales team undertakes an extensive consultation process with each new or existing customer, which can take as little as a few weeks or as long as a year. It's part of an effort to determine what the customer’s precise needs are, whether it’s command lights that can illuminate an entire football field or cameras that offer facial recognition from as far as a kilometer away Fort Garry Fire Trucks can customize it for you.
FDIC 2023 is fast approaching, and we look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s conference. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with our customers so come by and see us at booth 2342! For specification details on any of our trucks call our sales department for pricing information at 800-565-3473.

Our practice nights were usually one and a half to two hours. And with the average year allowing for 42 practice nights, that is only 63 to 84 hours annually to cover the basic firefighter training requirements, which should include a live fire exercise and a driver training drill. It becomes a real juggling act if you include MVIs (extrication), first response medical, first response hazmat and wildland urban interface training. By Ed Brouwer

Completing specific functional tasks as part of the overall plan to save lives and mitigate property damage is what fire fighting is all about. By Manfred Kihn

A shrinking volunteer base, tighter budgets and an increased workload have become a constant for many fire stations across Canada. It’s no surprise the cohesion of volunteers has taken a beating. One thing that is often overlooked by fire departments is the increased and effective use of social media platforms to address some of the barriers being faced by the fire service and help to highlight the hard work and dedication that crews display on a regular basis.
