Jan. 31, 2014, Melfort, Sask. – Eight residents of a seniors home in Saskatchewan were sent to hospital after a fire at a seniors housing complex in the city of Melfort.
RCMP say residents of the four-storey complex had to flee when the blaze broke out early Thursday.
Police say firefighters were able to contain the fire to one suite.
The 82-year-old resident in that unit suffered burns and smoke inhalation, and seven other seniors in the building were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
It's not known when they will be allowed to return to their suites.
RCMP could not immediately say if the building was equipped with sprinklers.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
