Electric-vehicle training rolling out in Canada

May 16, 2016 – A United States training program that teaches first responders to safely respond to emergencies involving electric, hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles will be delivered in Canada as early as this summer.

The Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners signed a license agreement with the National Fire Protection Association, announced on May 10, that will make training based on the NFPA's program for alternately fueled vehicles available to Canadian first responders.

The program's materials include train-the-trainer and classroom sessions, resources and emergency field guides, all of which will be available to career and volunteer firefighters in Canada under the license agreement. The program extends to police, EMS and tow truck operators, and, thanks to translation from the Standards Council of Canada, will also be available in French.

The Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners is working with provincial and territorial training authorities that have invested in the project to introduce the training to first responders starting in the summer.
