F.I.E.R.O seeking input for drag rescue device survey

Aug. 25, 2020 — The Fire Industry Educational Resource Organization (F.I.E.R.O.) is dedicated to helping improve firefighter safety, health and wellness. F.I.E.R.O. is asking firefighters — volunteer or career, male or female — to take a moment to complete its drag rescue device (DRD) survey.

The NFPA 1971 Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting technical committee is starting a revision cycle and reviewing current requirements. In the 2007 edition, the technical committee required that every structural and proximity coat include a DRD. The DRD, not to be confused with a harness or rappelling device, was intended strictly as a means of removing a fallen firefighter from a dangerous environment.

This requirement has remained in the standard for each successive revision and the technical committee has received public input concerning this mandatory requirement.  Given this public input, F.I.E.R.O. seeking information on the use of the DRD.
