Family homeless after Christmas Day fire

Dec. 26, 2007 - SAINT JOHN, N.B. _ A family of four was left homeless on Christmas Day when fire extensively damaged a two-storey house in Saint John.

Toys littered the lawn as firefighters ripped at the roof with chainsaws and axes amid the smoke.

One firefighter carried Christmas presents from the home to the safe snowbank on the other side of the road.District Chief Peter Saab of the Saint John Fire Department said the blaze began during the noon hour.Saab said the first floor and roof were badly damaged, while the rest of the house suffered major water and smoke damage.The official cause of the fire was not known, although evidence points to a chimney fire.The home's residents _ two adults and two children _ will be staying with family for the remainder of the holidays.There were no injuries.
