A provincial police spokesman says the fire broke out mid-morning in Mont-Laurier, about 240 kilometres northwest of Montreal.
Sgt. Michel Brunet says the residence was home to about 30 people, many of them in wheelchairs.
One body was found by firefighters but investigators haven't been able to determine whether the dead person was a man or a woman.
Brunet says several seniors and a number of police who came to the rescue were overcome by smoke but none of the injuries are serious.
