Fire fatalities across Ontario increase by 65 per cent

May 5, 2020, Ontario – Since January 1, fire fatalities across Ontario increased by 65 per cent compared to the same time last year, with 17 Ontarians dying in fires in March alone.

Between January 1 and May 4, 2019, there were 31 fire fatalities in Ontario. Over that same period this year, there have been 51 fire fatalities.

Fire chiefs across the province are urging the public to keep fire safety top of mind.  Some public safety education tips include informing the public how to reduce fire risks in their homes, including making sure alarms are in working condition and a fire escape plan has been put in place.
