Oct. 23, 2012, Victoria, B.C. – A fire in a piece of engine equipment has forced a B.C. ferry out of service for the rest of the day.

BC Ferry spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says the fire occurred in a bow thruster compartment of the Queen of New Westminster during a sailing between Tsawwassen and Duke Point Tuesday morning.

She says the fire was quickly put out and the vessel returned to dock.

Marshall says two crew members suffered smoke inhalation but no passengers were injured.

The Queen of New Westminster – which was built in 1964 – has been removed from service for the remainder of the day and an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.

The same vessel was taken out of service during the May long weekend when it had problems with a rudder and a cooling system.
