No serious injuries have been reported.
Officers helped firefighters evacuate the residents at the Fairview Lodge after the call came in just before 10 a.m. Monday.
The seniors evacuated from the home are reported to be safe inside a nearby church (St. John the Evangelist).
Heavy smoke could be seen drifting from the building as fire crews battled the blaze, and area residents were being advised to keep their windows closed.
Police were also asking schools in the area of the fire (on Dundas Street just west of the downtown core) to keep students inside until further notice.
