August 25, 2010, Winnipeg - Winnnipeg firefighters extinguished a fire that was burning close to Portage Place mall and two apartment buildings in downtown Winnipeg.
August 25, 2010 By The Canadian Press
The blaze badly charred a three-storey building before firefighters put out the flames Tuesday afternoon.
It's believed the building contained office space.
It's sandwiched between the two apartment buildings immediately north of the mall, which was not evacuated during the fire.
One firefighter received minor injuries and at least one resident has suffered smoke inhalation.
Winnipeg fire department platoon chief Ralph Ens said the fire started on the building's roof and spread to lower floors.
"The heat broke out the windows and the fire got inside,'' he said.
An early estimate of damage to the building and its contents is $1 million.
