Firefighters battle Woolwich barn blaze

Fifty three firefighters from Floradale, St Jacobs and Conestogo, Ont., responded to a 6:50 p.m. fire on Reid Woods Dr. in Woolwich Township Wednesday night.. Water was shuttled from a hydrant in Elmira four kilometres to the west. The barn was fully involved upon arrival and firefighters concentrated on saving the house. Siding was already melting on the adjacent house when the first truck from arrived. The farmer lost 10 calves, four cows, 500 chickens and three horses in the fire. Conestogo and St Jacobs crews were cleared from the scene at 9:15 p.m.. Floradale firefighters remained on scene for many hours to continue house cooling the house. Damage is estimated at $250,000. The old order Mennonite family will rebuild the 43 year old barn (rebuilt after a fire in 1967) in a traditional Mennonite barn raising within two weeks. Photo by Gary Dinkel.
