Former firefighter gets apology
Oct. 1, 2008, Calgary - A former Calgary firefighter who became homeless after his Workers Compensation Board payments were cut off is getting an apology from the board for the way he was treated.

Greg McDougall, who was a firefighter for nearly 30 years, was diagnosed in
2001 with post-traumatic stress disorder because of his job and can no longer
work.
The board cut of his compensation after 11 months and he became homeless
within a year.
Provincial ombudsman Gord Button investigated his case for two years and said
the former firefighter had been treated unfairly.
The board has now given McDougall back pay for the time when his payments
were cut off and is covering his medical costs and providing him with living
expenses.
The board is also making some changes in the way it handles complex mental
health issues.
