Tim Greer, a spokesman at the provincial forest fire centre, said that by early Tuesday evening crews had managed to contain the fire to about 15 hectares and there was no open flame.

The blaze began mid-afternoon Tuesday and spread quickly because of high winds.

Six water bombers were used, along with dozens of firefighters on the ground.

No homes or businesses were threatened, but the thick smoke forced the detour of traffic between Fredericton and Oromocto.

The highway was expected to reopen Tuesday evening.

Greer says there is no indication how the fire started.
