May 1, 2009 – Halifax – Firefighters say they now have an intense brush fire under control on the outskirts of Halifax.
Officials say they are starting to open up some streets and allow some residents return to their homes.
About 1,200 residents were evacuated from their Halifax-area homes after the fire broke out earlier this week.
More than 100 firefighters are battling the blaze, which has destroyed at least eight homes and damaged another seven.
Lloyd Currie, a spokesman for the Halifax fire service, says the remnants of downed trees and brush from hurricane Juan in 2003 helped ignite the fire.
No one has been injured.
