Retired St. Catharines firefighter succumbs to disease

St. Catharines, Ont. - Jerry Harpwood had retired from the St. Catharines Fire Department just six years ago, after a three-decade career; at about the same time, Harpwood was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a cancer of the bone marrow. After a pitched battle that included a stem-cell transplant, Jerry passed away Dec. 17 at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton.
