JIBC creates new option for emergency management grads

July 7, 2021, British Columbia —Graduate students from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) emergency management program now have the chance to advance their education in a related degree program at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC).

The recent inter-provincial articulation agreement means students who have graduated since January 2018 from NAIT’s Diploma in Disaster and Emergency and Security Management program can officially enroll in JIBC’s four-year Bachelor of Emergency and Security Management Studies (BESMS) program with a full two-year advanced credit.

The BESMS degree program is delivered in both a full and part-time online format with topics covering disaster planning; business continuity, risk and crisis management; security and intelligence; business administration; and leadership and management. The JIBC website says students will have the opportunity to collaborate with fellow students and share experiences in an interactive environment led by faculty who are experts in their fields.

In a recent press release, JIBC’s vice-president, academic, Colleen Vaughan, said she was happy to partner with NAIT and welcomed the new students to the BC school to further their training and education in the emergency management field

In the same release, Sarah Wareing, JIBC’s dean of the School of Public Safety stated: “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the important role emergency management professionals play in public safety during times of crisis. JIBC is proud to do its part in helping train those who prepare communities for the emergencies of the future.”
