Flooding prompts state of emergency in Kenora

June 28, 2016, Kenora, Ont. - A northwestern Ontario city has declared a state of emergency in the wake of significant flooding last weekend.

Mayor Dave Canfield declared the emergency on Monday after Kenora received at least 109 millimetres of rain over a two-day period which resulted in moderate to extensive damage to more than 20 roads.

Veterans Drive, a main entrance into Kenora, suffered a complete washout and a temporary detour has been set up along a former road used by pulp trucks while the city waits to receive culverts to rebuild the road.

City clerk Heather Kasprick says Veterans Drive will remain closed until the latter part of the week but is expected to reopen by the Canada Day weekend.

Kasprick says the city doesn't have a count of homes that may have been damaged by the flood and doesn't know of anyone evacuated due to the flooding.

She says more than 20 rural roads were affected by flooding and are reopening as the water recedes.

''It is a beautiful sunny day here and if the weather continues, we will see the water go down naturally on some of the rural road areas, but in other areas roads crews will need to work on repairs and drainage,'' Kasprick said Tuesday in an email.
