Lots to learn at FDIC

March 25, 2011, Indianapolis – Thursday was another fantastic day! I
attended two classroom sessions. The first dealt with wildland urban
interface fires, a subject that is critically important to those of us
whose homes are surrounded by forest.

My second session involved a subject that I know will thrill my firefighters. I can add a new element to my sessions on ghe hazards of utilities. Those who work with me know of my passion for firefighter safety, particularly around energized electrical equipment. This course was all about the hazards associated with solar power systems, an issue that will become increasingly more important.

The afternoon was spent in an initial reconnaissance of the trade show. I intended to spend most of the day today touring the show, so I wanted to plan my attack. The scope of this show is mindboggling. There are vendors who address every aspect of the fire service, so a plan is necessary. In addition to the tools and equipment, PPE and communications gear, and  myriad other products, I have never seen so many fire trucks in one place!

Last evening was left open for socializing. Wholesale Fire and Rescue hosted a get-together for Canadian firefighters attending FDIC. We rubbed shoulders with firefighters from Halifax to Comox, and from Southern Ontario to High Level, Alta., – a great opportunity to share war stories with our peers from all over Canada. One of the highlights of this reception was a visit by Bobby Halton, from FDIC, who shared his thoughts in an informal, social setting.

I can hardly wait to see what today brings.
